"The road narrows" is a metaphor for failed marriage, job changes, death of a child, and eventually aging and death. It also is a larger lesson for our species.

Even a baby being born has to go through a new pathway to enter life. We all did. We all shall again.

Without a past or memory
All roads and paths were free to me

I started walking, hopeful heart
No thought misfortune might befall
Truth offered only one way
But my eager heart demanded all

Soon the plans I made fell down
Signs came up saying turn aside
My vista wide was now in doubt
Different adventure to be tried

Evil became known to me
My soul fit in a smaller space
But seeing others passing by
I struggled to keep in the race

When detour becomes the new way
or path ahead narrows small
I thank the gift that is today
